| Do you know how your business operates?
Many managers don't!
Statement: Half of the Managers
in UK industry do not know the details of the processes their
businesses rely upon!
Before you disagree too violently, just consider a likely
situation. You are a departmental manager in a medium sized
manufacturing organisation. Yes, you know in some detail what
goes on in your department. You know how many staff you employ;
you know the volumes of product you produce and the production
and transfer costs. So far, so good. But do you know all the
detailed incoming information and material flows?
- Do you know if there are constraints in your processes?
- Who tells you of shortcomings within your department?
Most managers will be able to point at shortcomings in other
departments. How often do you hear about the trouble with
Sales not getting the orders right, or Shipping being slow
in getting the goods to the Customer?
Have I touched a raw nerve here?
Or what about the manager of a service company who relies
on field repair staff to generate income. Does he consider
better product training for his staff, which has to happen
off the job, or does he tell them to drive faster and work
harder to cover more calls per day? Or is the spare parts
organisation not meeting their Service Level Agreement and
this is leading to the loss of revenue?
It happens, we've been there and we've done that. Blame is
a human weakness and the faster things happen the more the
blame culture is called into play.
Now, take a step back from your daily grind and picture the
benefits of a better perspective of the job and of the organisation.
With a clearer, sharper and a bigger picture you can easily
see the benefits to your business: fewer hold-ups, lower stock
holding, better control of the business cycle, the ability
to pin-point the friction areas and get the system moving
smoothly again.
"Now that's what I call a smooth operation!"
"Why did we not do this a long time ago?"
"That's a few percentage points off the cost of sale."
Yes, it is possible and it's not difficult.
What PDT can bring to your business is perspective. We can
enable you and your fellow managers to see more clearly and
control more nearly - to paraphrase a well-known phrase.
We will require some investment from you of your time. We
don't have crystal balls - well, not yet - so we will need
to understand the details of your business directly from you
and your staff.
Nobody knows your business better than you do. BUT we guarantee
you will know it better when we have completed our work.
PDT will present you with a 'road map' of your business,
all of it or just a part that you select. We will be able
to demonstrate the data passing through your business and
the interfaces that form the links between the sections and
divisions of the company.
We can show you how the decisions that you make will affect
the flows within the company and allow you to better understand
the constraints that operate on all businesses. The result
will be the ability to plan for a smoother operation, with
better balance all along the way.
Our work will give you a new perspective on your business
and one that you can use into the future to keep your business
best able to deliver value to your customers and best able
to respond to the changing pressures of the modern business
world.
